Born in Portugal in 1988, Varela began his career with local club FC Porto's youth academy. He made his senior debut for the club in 2007 and quickly established himself as a key player in the team's defense. During his time at Porto, he helped the club win several major titles, including four consecutive league championships from 2010 to 2013.
Varela was also named the Best Goalkeeper in Portugal's top-flight league twice, in 2010 and 2014. He was known for his excellent reflexes, agility,Saudi Pro League Focus and technical skills on the ball, which made him a standout performer for the club.
