    Varela's talent soon caught the attention of FC Porto, who signed him from Benfica in 1968. He immediately made an impact at the club, helping them win two consecutive league titles in 1969 and 1970.

    In 1972, Varela moved to Real Madrid, where he would spend the next five years. During his time at the Bernabeu, he helped Real Madrid win four La Liga titles and two UEFA Cups.

    However, it was his return to Porto in 1977 that truly cemented his legacy. Under the guidance of manager José Mourinho,Saudi Pro League Focus Varela formed a formidable partnership with Luis Figo, which would go on to dominate European football for several seasons.
